Can ethical action be justified in terms of the rational pursuit of one's own interests, and does it need to be? The familiarity of this kind of morality, which makes in-group loyalty almost equivalent to morality, seems to allow some comparative and evolutionary psychologists, including Frans De Waal (1996), to regard non-human animals to be acting in ways very similar to those that are regarded as moral. Relying again on etymology, Nietzsche asserts that the very notion of "ought" sprung from the notion of "owe," logically, since the relationship of buyer and seller is among the oldest of relationships, certainly predating the establishment of the state in any form.
