Nathan Bransford, a former literary agent, summarizes the differences between “thrillers, suspense, and mysteries” in a 2008 blog post: Mysteries have mysteries, i.e., something you don’t know until the end. I hit a very difficult spot just before the scene in Chapter 15 of The Reckless Engineer. Odd psychological thriller Mata Hari: Soft core porn but not too bad a flick. Noir / Hardboiled – a darker, grittier, more sinister and atmospheric crime mystery, often involving a hardened tough old detective, tough settings and characters, and can also have an unhappy ending.

Some in the English department share his enthusiasm. In that post I realised that like a lot of writers, and a lot of experts in writing, the cross-flow between these genres provides a difficulty in localising one genre we might like our books to be catergorised into, if forced to do this on bookshelves or websites. Hannah Berry's graphic novel "Britten and Brülightly" (Metropolitan Books: 156 pp., $20 paper) would rank as an audacious debut in prose, but the genius is in how she melds the dark tinges of the retro-PI story of Fernández Britten's existential struggle for truth despite its emotional cost with an illustrative style of blue and gray hues and dark lines conveying thousands of words in a handful of strokes.

In this series addition, Werthen and Gross investigate the murder of Herr Karl, a renowned headwaiter at one of Vienna’s premier cafés. I came to this book without knowing it was based on true events (in fact I discovered this information in the postface of the book). The paradise where snow falls and Yule logs burn and punch is poured – and a dead body (or two) appears to spice everything up. I would add to that “and make up what you don’t.” I can’t admit to any particular experiences from my books because the statute of limitations has not run out. haha

In the climatic final act, Suzy gains the advantage when she shuts off all the lights in her apartment. However, it�s pretty hard for even an intelligent layperson to pick up a scholarly treatise on some aspect of legal doctrine and try to stay awake, much less enjoy the time as it passes.
