'History is written by the victors' only when they have a written language. In the 1150s, the Taira were on the winning side in a pair of disputes that helped them rise to positions of power. Women had little legal standing, were not given the opportunity to learn to read or write, had no say regarding choice of a marital partner and were lightly regarded by their husbands. They decided that this game was the best way to honor Joel, and so the decision to memorialize him through this creative process (rather than through conventional means) was a natural and seamless one.
